Mount Fuji has a special place in the hearts of the Japanese and is both a symbol of Japanese culture and a sacred sight. The mountain at 3776 meters is the highest in Japan and is regarded as one of the “Three Holy Mountains of Japan”.
Fujiyoshida City is picturesquely nestled at the northern base of Mount Fuji at between 650 – 900 meters above sea level. The city and surrounding Fuji Five Lakes boasts stunning natural beauty and is a photographer’s paradise for those stereotypical iconic shots of Japan featuring cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji.
Fujiyoshida is often called the gateway to Mount Fuji, and Arakurayama Sengen Park is famous for its amazing views of the sacred mountain. The park directly faces Mount Fuji and offers fantastic panoramic views of the downtown area of Fujiyoshida. For the best views climb the 400 steps from Arakura Sengen Shrine to the top of the stairway where you can find the Chureito Pagoda.
The Chureito Pagoda is a five-storied vermilion-lacquered pagoda overlooking Fujiyoshida City with Mount Fuji as a stunning backdrop. The pagoda is part of Arakura Sengen Shrine and was built as a peace memorial in 1963. The pagoda is a popular spot for viewing and photographing Mount Fuji, which can be snapped together with the beautiful Pagoda. There is something special about the traditional Japanese architecture of the pagoda together with the natural beauty of Mount Fuji.
Arakurayama Sengen Park is also home to many cherry trees which bloom every spring making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in Japan. Autumn with the beautiful fall colours in early November is also a stunning time to visit with wonderful colours around the pagoda and surrounding area.
Exploring the Fuji Five Lakes is also a must while you are in the area. The Fuji Five Lakes are called Fujigoko in Japanese and are a collection of five lakes located at the northern foot of Mount Fuji near Fujiyoshida. Lake Kawaguchiko is the most famous of the five lakes and easiest to reach from Tokyo. The lake’s northern shores are especially breathtaking and offer spectacular views of Mount Fuji. Make sure you also enjoy the wonderful hot springs and various museums located around the area as well as visit the famous Fuji-Q Amusement Park if you are looking for some thrill seeking and adventure.
