Denbouin street in Asakusa is the perfect mix of modern Tokyo and old Edo Tokyo. You can find traditional shops and great restaurants that will leave a lasting impression.
DENBOUIN STREET – THE TRADITIONAL EDO STYLE STREET
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Tokyo is Asakusa. Asakusa offers so many different things like Sensoji Temple and is in walking distance to Tokyo Sky Tree. However, this article focus on a unique area that will let you feel the atmosphere of Edo, Denbouin Street.
Why should you come to Denbouin street? First, Denboin street is gaining popularity among not only tourists but Japanese as well. This is because this place offers so much, from scenery to shops, this place truly creates a unique atmosphere. Although the street itself is only about 200 meters long, it is crammed full of specialty shops, restaurants, and a number of other businesses.
Don’t take this place lightly, you can do some serious shopping here. Whether you are looking for the perfect gift or shopping for yourself, you will surely find something here. Souvenir shops will provide any number of gag gifts, but if you are looking for something more traditional, you won’t have to walk very far.
YONOYA – JAPANESE HAIR ACCESSORIES
There are antique Kimono shops, shops specializing in festival goods, food stands serving traditional Japanese dishes and my personal favorite, Yonoya. They specialized in Japanese boxwood hand curved combs and hair accessories.
These have been used in Japan for centuries. If you are looking for something truly traditional, truly Japanese, then this would be perfect for you. The price may shock you, but each piece, with proper care, will last you a life time. Even if you aren’t looking to buy one, stepping into the store and looking at all the different kinds will surely impress you.

MIDORIYA – THE OLD SOBA RESTAURANT
Like I mentioned before, it’s not only about the shops, Denbouin street has a plethora of restaurants for you to enjoy. Your choice of different cuisines including Japanese, Western, Chinese, Izakaya and Cafes. However, if you are looking for a traditional experience at a fair price, I would suggest visiting, my favorite, Midoriya.
This small soba restaurant has been in Asakusa for 59 years. This restaurant really values its quality at a reasonable price. So if you are hungry, this place will surely satisfy you.
