Studio Ghibli Approved! Cutest “Totoro Cream Puff” at a Café in Tokyo | Japan Guide

Hayao Miyazaki is a film director of Studio Ghibli, which is known for producing masterpieces such as “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind”, and “Castle in the Sky”. “Shiro-Hige’s (white beard’s) Cream Puff Factory” is the only café where you can eat cream puffs officially approved by the Ghibli Studio, and it is located in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo.

The Setagaya Daita Station of the Odakyu Line is the nearest train stop to the café. After getting off the train, it is about 10 minute walk through a residential area. Then you see the café nestled quietly in surrounding greenery and marked with a signboard of “My Neighbor Totoro” at the front.

The café is built by remodeling a single-family residence. The first floor is a gift shop for take-home food, and there is a café is on the second floor with tables in the building as well as on the balcony.

“Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Factory” is closed on Tuesdays, and otherwise it is open between 10:30 AM and 7:00 PM. We recommend you to make a reservation on any day of the week, particularly if you are planning to visit during lunchtime, as many people are waiting on the bench outside the café, depending on the hours of the day.

Freshly baked bread is sold on the second floor of the café, and you can eat it there or take it home. The most popular menu of this café is “Totoro Cream Puff” without doubt, however fresh pasta is also highly recommended for lunchtime.

Chewy fresh pasta offers enjoyable texture as well as delicate taste. Served with two kinds of freshly baked bread, you can enjoy the dish as if you were doing a taste testing. If you like it, you can buy it as a take-home on the way out.

In addition, Totoro is exhibited everywhere in the café and there are also illustrated books available to read freely, so children can enjoy themselves without being bored. The balcony is surrounded by trees, and you can enjoy an atmosphere as if you were dining in a forest. It is especially recommended for spring and autumn.

“Totoro Cream Puff” offers various flavors, and assortment varies by season, too. The chocolate decoration on top of Totoro’s head changes, depending on the flavor of the cream filling. They are very cute, and it makes you feel better just by looking at them.

Because they are so cute, you may hesitate to eat it, but the taste is superb, too. Each type of cream inside the puff is very rich as well as filling, including solid fruits such as peach or chestnut.

After you thoroughly enjoy yourself in the café, you can buy the same Totoro Cream Puff in the gift shop on the first floor. In addition to the cream puff, the shop has a large product assortment including cookies and other baked goods, and you may have a hard time to decide what to buy.

The gift shop’s wall is covered with decorations, including autographs of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s character figurines and ornaments. This is a world of Ghibli in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, and it is officially approved by the Studio Ghibli.
