Arashiyama is one of Kyoto’s most famous tourist attractions. At the mention of Arashiyama, most people envision temples, shrines, Japanese gardens and the luscious bamboo forest.

But did you know that in Arashiyama, a city steeped in history and elegance, there is a restaurant where you can sample some beef that is so high-grade that it has been labeled “legendary”?

“Otsuka”: the beef restaurant worthy of crowds

Todays’ focus is on “Otsuka,” a Wagyu beef restaurant in a residential district either a 5-minutes’ walk from Torokko Saga Station or a 15-minute stroll across the Togetsukyo Bridge from the Hankyu Arashiyama Line.

Wagyu beef is a rather gourmet cuisine, so most people worry about the cost, but we assure you that there is no need for concern here.

At Otsuka, there are plenty of menu options for around 1000-2000 yen. And, as such, you can sample some of Japan’s delicious Wagyu beef for quite a reasonable price.

Lunch time can get particularly crowded, so Otsuka has seats prepared for waiting customers.

It even has an English menu especially prepared for foreign customers. What is particularly impressive is that it has translated not only the cuts of the meat, but also the explanations of the meats’ grade and different flavors.

The No.1 recommendation: the kalbi-don

Now what you’ve all been waiting for: the menu.

Kalbi-don Set Meal (1,600 yen). For quality Wagyu beef, you have to confess this meal is quite affordable. As you can see, the set features Kalbi-don (a marinated beef rice bowl), salad, miso soup, and side-dishes. The sweetness of the marinated oils consumes your senses, and in the next moment the meat melts in your mouth. The addition of sesame and spring onion draw out the sweetness of the meat, and it goes without saying that the dish pairs wonderfully with rice.

Devour some legendary “Murasawa Beef”

Now for the main course… The beef so high-quality it is referred to as “Legendary”… The “Murasawa Beef” Steak.

Murasawa Sirloin Steak (5,900 yen), is a 150g steak of Murasawa Beef, served with a side salad and rice.

Murasawa Beef is a type of wagyu beef produced in Nagano prefecture. By investigating three generations of the cows’ bloodlines, the producers can select the highest quality heifers. They are then fed only the finest feed, and carefully raised for 24 to 27 months in a farm with tatami mat flooring to reduce the cows’ stress. Since very few are exported, they are known as Japan’s “Legendary Beef”.

In Japan, the most delicious and high-quality kinds of beef receive brand names. These brand names are mostly the same name as the area of production, for example Kobe Beef, but this Murasawa Beef is a rare example, using the producer’s name instead.

Murasawa Beef has won many awards, including winning first place at Japan’s national beef fair, a true testament to its quality.

Otsuka utilises infrared technology to carefully grill the high-grade Murasawa Beef to perfection. It takes great care with not just the quality selection of its meat, but also with its preparation methods, which is how it can provide such exceptionally delicious dishes.

From affordable Wagyu lunch sets, to high-grade meat, Otsuka takes particular care of the quality of its ingredients and preparation methods in order to offer the absolute best dishes to its customers from not just Japan, but across the globe. Definitely stop by when you visit Arashiyama.
